The Black Musicians Coalition was founded by three black women in 2020 at Kennesaw State University. They sought to bring awareness to the inequities and disparities placed on black musicians at the collegiate, local, and professional levels. The organization was formed during the summer of 2020, during the events that occurred within the Black Lives Matter movement. After witnessing the horrendous acts, black students who attended KSU’s Bailey School of Music began to use the hashtag #BlackInTheArts to share their experiences with racism and microaggressions as musicians. BMC has since produced an annual multidisciplinary Black history production to feature gifted Black artists at the university entitled "The Blueprint," which has won three Diversity, Inclusion, and Equity awards at Kennesaw State University.
